The Avengers - We Are The One (1977)

Grace: Initially I thought it sounded reminiscent of The Runaways or any girl-type punk band I know.... which isn't many. It sounds old... or like its trying to be old. It has an anthem like theme to it, like a 'We are the children!" type thing. I know they were saying "We are the one" but it was like a "Unite! Lets all unite!" thing, which I think is pretty played out and overdone. The lyrics are very simple, which is maybe to be expected from a punk song? I dunno. It was catchy, I'll give it that for sure.

The second song wasn't as catchy, I just found it to be really noisy. It was really talky. They were just talking. There wasn't that sound, like.... when you sing, your voice makes...... a singing noise (laughter). There wasn't any singing noise in their voice!

The third song was also really repetitive. There was a lot of "Whoa whoa, no no" type thing going on. I actually didn't mind it, and I can't claim not to like that because a lot of the songs I like have that stuff in it. So oddly enough I did like it. The 3rd song was my favourite. They lyrics were easy to understand, and it was easy to sing along to.

Ger: So, this record actually is pretty old. It came out in 1977.

Really?

Yeah, this is a pretty early punk rock release. They opened for the Sex Pistols at their last show ever in Winterland, California.

Are they all ladies?

Nope, just the singer, Penelope Houston, who went on to be a folk singer after and I think a film-maker of some sort. You said you liked Car Crash, which I thought would be your favourite, because of the whoa whoas (laughter). It's sort of poppier than the other two, right?

Yeah, I would agree with that. As much as I hate to admit that I like that stuff, I guess I actually do.

So, we actually also just watched the movie The Avengers the other night, which I thought you would really like and I don't think you did....

I REALLY didn't like that movie at all! It was so talky and I didn't know what was going on half the time.

If you had to pick that movie, or this record, which would you say you liked better?

I would actually say that of the two, I prefer this record.

Is it basically because this record is only ten minutes and that movie was two and a half hours?

Yeah, i was gonna say that.
